In the early days of Nvidia RTX Remix, there were several promising mods released, but this one stands out. Need for Speed Underground 2 was the perfect example of a game that could benefit from a lighting overhaul, and so far the results are quite impressive.

The footage captured by MxBenchmarkPC shows us a game that would truly benefit from adding path tracing, especially in the absence of a remake.

Need for Speed Underground 2 was locked to 120 frames per second at launch, so removing it would cause the game to become unstable. The performance drops between pre- and post-RTX Remix gameplay are the same as in Max Payne Remix.

Using an RTX 4080, MxBenchmarkPC can achieve 30-50 frames per second at both 4K and 1440p with DLSS 3.5 enabled, depending on quality settings. There's some optimization work to be done here. The game has a light culling feature, which turns off lights that are not being used. This is more evident in the RTX Remix mod, but still causes a flicker in the lower third of the screen.

Even so, the RTX Remix mod for NFS: Underground 2 confirms what had already been suspected before Remix's open beta. That is, old-school driving games will all benefit from reworking their lighting.

  • As for the technical aspects, these games are still sound, it's just that the visuals needed a revamp to bring them back to life. Running games via RTX Remix requires one of the best graphics cards money can buy, especially with how demanding these games have been.
