Can a sequel possibly surpass GTA V in sales and scope?

With over $1 billion in sales in three days, how could the next Grand Theft Auto game beat that figure? While it might seem like a guarantee considering the franchises success and notoriety, maintaining such huge sales figures isn't exactly easy. The next game could easily gross lower initial sales due to a variety of reasons, or it could surpass GTA V's figures in various ways. What's your opinion?

The honest truth is that it probably will based purely off the hype. When you have a game reach the success that this one has. Usually, it carries over onto the next at least sales wise. The simple fact is that Rockstar hasn't really disappointed anyone when it came to GTA. With that being said I can't see nothing but more success.

I find it hard to imagine the next GTA game living up to the sales of GTA V. They would have to come up with a really great, fresh idea that would shock people, the same way that people were blown away by the novelty of having 3 main characters.

Yeah I really don't think that it would be that hard for them to replicate the success that they had with this game. They have done it before so they know what it takes to make a top notch game. I think that the next GTA will surely be something that we all have never seen before and it will be a top game.

ACSAPA, you're probably right about sales. I could easily see the next GTA title beating the initial sales of GTA V, but GTA V has had a strong pair of legs since its release. It's probably crossed the $2 billion mark by now and has sold well over 35 million copies. So it's going to prove incredibly difficult for even the greatest follow up to match that kind of performance.

I think the sales will be just as good or better, I say this because it is the legendary GTA series. Everyone and anyone wants to play GTA whether they are a gamer or not. A lot of people buy GTA just because it is GTA. It is a very popular and prosperous game and I think it will continue to be. We will see though!

In my opinion I can only see the GTA series going from strength to strength. Up to now I think every new title thats been released as lived up to expectations and I have no reason to doubt rockstar's ability to carry this on.

The fact that people are already talking about the next one, tends to suggest that people haven't grown tired of the series or formula yet.

The hype helped sell it, just like hype helped sell DESTINY, but at what point do you call it Advertisement and not Hype? They just properly marketed their game to the right audiences, which other studios fail to do in a consistent basis.

I think they can surpass it with each next installment, to be completely honest. It's RockStar we're talking about here - they haven't really disappointed me in anything they've done aside from some online fixes and changes to five.

But that being said, you have to give them an A+ for making five what they said it could be.

I think they can still pass it though.

I think it's possible. GTA has always been a really popular game series. I remember when GTA V was just released. The sales were insanely high!

Well, it will be really hard to surpass the success that the GTA V currently has, but it is definitely possible.
Rockstar never disappointed their customers, they will bring a good sequel anyway, we just need to see if it will live up to the hype.

I'm pretty sure next GTA title will surpass GTA V sales. I really hope the next game will be set in modern Vice City, I think it has better atmosphere than both Liberty City and San Andreas, maybe that's because I really like Miami. :D

I only hope that the next game will come in the same time for both consoles and PC because I don't really feel like buying a console just for one game (although it's my favorite game).

I think everyone who bought the first one and really enjoyed it will buy the next one. I'm betting they'll match in sales, if not surpass them.

Yeah it can, for the next 5 years. Before the release of GTA V, GTA IV is still being played, heck even San Andreas. People will buy the GTA franchise even if it's good or bad, and I know Rockstar will not fail. If they do something new on the next game, I'm sure it will surpass the sales of GTA V.

Rockstar games is not really EA Games, they don't release the same title every year, I don't see a reason why anyone would have any doubt about next GTA title...

Definitely. I mean, the only thing that could hold a new GTA back is the limitations of current consoles, which are already being shown as inadequate only a year in... but I don't doubt that it's possible to make the game evn bigger, and with gaming still gaining popularity every year, I do expect to see more and more sales.
